Through the Teen Leadership Program at the local Girls Inc. in Birmingham, I had the
opportunity to meet many workers from around the community, ranging from volunteers at the
McWane Science Center to the Jefferson County Commissioners' Office. Still, the one table that
stood out to me was City Paper Co. When I walked over, I was greeted warmly, and they lit up
when I mentioned I wanted to study graphic design, as that is one of the many things they
specialize in. During this brief encounter, I was able to ask questions and learn about what they
do as a company, and they have had me hooked on them ever since
After I graduated high school in May, I decided to reach out to them to request an internship with
them this Summer so I could learn more about graphic design as a profession and refine my
skills as a designer before I begin college. Only a few hours after I sent the request, Mrs. Amy
responded, asking if I could come in for a meeting with her the very next day. The next day, Mrs.
Amy met with me and gave me a small tour of the building, along with introducing me to the
employees who were working that day. While touring the building, I didn’t feel out of place or
awkward because everyone was so kind and welcoming to me.
As I’ve begun my internship, I’ve learned something new every day, whether I was helping
arrange kits or eating lunch with the other staff members, Ella and Ellie. Recently, I was even
able to give back to Girls Inc. with a donation of clipboards from City Paper Co., which they
could use in their summer or school-year programs. Over the summer, I hope I can learn even
more that will help me in my professional journey.
